    <![CDATA[<strong>Author:</strong> <a href="http://www.usa2strokers.com/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=476" rel="nofollow">frame maker</a><br /><strong>Subject:</strong> Dirtbag donor bike - RD400<br /><strong>Posted:</strong> 18-May-2012 at 11:07am<br /><br />Hey Jerry,<br><br>I went a different route with cleaning the tank... the gunk inside was a combination of years of rust with years of old gas.&nbsp;&nbsp; It was about 1/4" thick in the bottom, so I cut open the tank and scraped out as much as possible, then blasted the inside with crushed walnut.&nbsp;&nbsp; That got about 98% out.&nbsp;&nbsp; I then very carefully welded the two halves back together.&nbsp;&nbsp; It was alot of work, but the tank is usable now.&nbsp;&nbsp; I still have the acid you gave me (thanks!) to use on some other tanks I have that only have very light surface rust... so it will still be useful.<br>]]>

    <![CDATA[<strong>Author:</strong> <a href="http://www.usa2strokers.com/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=1434" rel="nofollow">Vintagetz</a><br /><strong>Subject:</strong> Replacement front end<br /><strong>Posted:</strong> 18-May-2012 at 10:33am<br /><br /><table width="99%"><tr><td class="BBquote"><strong><em>Originally posted by metricbikerider</strong></em><br /><br />I need to replace the forks on my newest rebuild project.<br><br>The bike is a 1976 RD400 and I have found a donor set but they are off of a '79 Daytona.<br><br>Are there any problems that I should know about before I go this route?<br><br>Thanks for the great info you all have provide over the last several years...<br><br>Buddy<br></td></tr></table><div>&nbsp;</div><div>No problems but there are differences between Daytona and STD forks some are positives.&nbsp; For ease of upgrade the Daytona is the best choice, it has an uncapped damping rod so RZ spec emulators are a drop in, all you have to do is follow the instructions for drilling the bottom of the rod.&nbsp;&nbsp; Two things to consider:</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>1. the Daytona has a smaller axle diameter, if you run an earlier RD spoked or mag wheel you will need to have some captured spacers made or swap out the wheel bearings.&nbsp; If you intend to use the std speedo hookup you will need the daytona speedo drive.&nbsp; If you are going to run stock 400 mags I would suggest using the Daytona wheels they are both lighter than the 76-78 models and the axle size is correct.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>If you want to adapt an Lockheed/Grimeca/Brembo twin piston caliper I have a bracket drawing for these style calipers on the Daytona fork mated with the larger 650 disc.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>2.&nbsp; The caliper mount has a different spacing, and the Daytona caliper is NOT a great one.&nbsp; If you intend to adapt a more modern caliper then this is no issue.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Great looking bike BTW, Lyn Garland has a 250 with exactly the same tank, seat and color sceme.</div>]]>

The main difference being mine (early style) runs 140 main jets stock and the filter is hollow. &nbsp;The later RD was more restrictive with tubes/baffles inside the filter and a different size jet.&nbsp;<div>But, at $25 dollars I figured what the hell.
